Japanese at Beaverton High School
Our program is a comprehensive program focused on communication in written and spoken Japanese and success within a globalized world and workplace. Especially in the third and fourth year classes, electronic communication and the use of technology for learning is encouraged and taught. After fourteen years as a successful IB Japanese program, we have transitioned into being an AP Japanese program with our first AP students experiencing success on the examination last year. We maintain active relationships with local universities, community groups, the Japanese Consulate, and exchange organizations.

Meet Miwa Sensei
Ms. Miwa was born and raised in a town called EB Gawa which is in Gifu prefecture on Honshu Island. She attended public schools all the way through high school, then went to a private university of foreign studies, majoring in American English! Ms. Miwa then spent her senior year in college at Washington State University. She started to pursue her career in teaching Japanese language in the U.S. and chose Portland State University, where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees.
Ms. Miwa loves learning American Sign Language and Korean language for hobbies. Something unique about about her is that she is an open heart surgery survivor! She also loves drawing portraits. In order for her to receive her teaching license, Ms. Miwa had to spend six months at BHS student-teaching Japanese. So, becoming a teacher here is her dream come true! #ExperienceBHS To her diversity is like someone like herself who was born and raised in a different continent and still gets the opportunity to do what she wants to do and is also accepted in a friendly manor. She hopes that more students will open up more to her program and the culture within it. {Link to post} |
