Extra Curricular Activities
BHS has always maintained an active student led Japanese club. J-Club provides students with a chance to explore cultural traditions, develop leadership skills, as well as have fun with friends in and out of the Japanese program, including exchange students at BHS. Past events have included origami, Japanese calligraphy, fund-raising for tsunami relief, field trips for sushi and movies, film days, New Year’s parties, Japanese White Day candy sales, Japanese video game tournaments, karaoke outings, ikebana (flower-arrangement), cos-play parties, traditional Japanese games and more.
Study Abroad Opportunities
Students are encouraged to participant in study abroad opportunities with Dr. Ozawa’s Oregon Intercultural Exchange, Youth For Understanding and other organizations. In the past a number of BHS students have received scholarships study abroad opportunities with Rotary, YFU and the Department of State’s American Youth Leadership Program. While study abroad during high school is not always possible for all students, all students are encouraged to consider studying abroad (in any country) at some point in their lives.
Japanese After High School
Many of our alumni go on to study Japanese at the college level and travel to Japan at some point for academic study, leisure and work. Several BHS alumni are currently working in Japan representing the U.S. and teaching English as participants in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, and one former student is even working for a major game company and an Japanese online gaming magazine. Our alumni are always encouraged to return to BHS and to share their experiences and inspire current students to aspire to greatness in Japanese
